Qualities of a Good Manager
There are some qualities of a good manager that you should know about that might help you be the manager you have desired to be. If you are not following at least these 6 qualities of a good manager listed below, you won't have the success you maybe could have. Unless you practice these manager qualities, not only will you not be as successful as you maybe could be but you probably won't move your company or business as far along as you could either.
These are manager qualities that are a must for any leader who wants to succeed:
1. The first of these qualities of a good manager is to know where you are going, what is to be accomplished, when, and why you are going there. You must know exactly where you want your organization to be and all your subordinates must know and clearly understand the same thing.
2. Another one of theses qualities of a good manager is the ability to properly inform your people where you are going, what is to be accomplished, why it is to be accomplished, when it is to be accomplished, what role they will play, and very importantly, how it will benefit them. Utilizing these manager qualities shows you how to inform, instruct, and teach your people where you are going not just one time but over and over consistently. Just because managers say something doesn't mean people hear it or buy into it. These qualities of a good manager requires it to be a priority to show the people what is in it for them. Without this manager quality, you will not get buyin from your people. Real ownership will be missing. You just can't assume that people will do their best just because you are boss. So, utilize all your manager qualities and skills to gain support from your people.
3. And another one of these key qualities of a good manager is knowing how to empower your people with the ability to meet or exceed their responsibilities. People will never be the best they can be unless they are empowered to do so. It doesn't work to just say you have empowered your people. For you see, when your people are properly empowered, they have everything they need to do their job well. When your people are empowered the right way, not only does it help assure the that job will be done well, it helps assure they will continually make improvements.
4. Qualities of a Good Manager include the ability to generate an effective standard work practice operating system. This is a system that produces consistent and accurate work, tracks and measures the key results, fixes problems as they occur without waisting time, and guarantees continuous improvement. I have watched so many companies fall short of real success because they didn't have this kind of system.
5. Another one the qualities of a good manager is the ability to create an environment that motivates people to meet or exceed their responsibilities. Let me tell you, no one leader is good enough to consistently motivate their people to exceed expectations. It takes the right kind of environment. When people enjoy their work, they do their job well because they are empowerment and free to express their needs so they can gain the ability to exceed their responsibilities.
6. And the last of these qualities of a good manager is the ability to appropriately deal with those people who don’t meet or exceed or may have difficulty meeting or exceeding their role of responsibilities. So many times managers don't develop people into the employee who can consistently meet or exceed expectations and don't or won't deal appropriately with those employees who either can't or won't be the employee they should be.
You see, when all these manager qualities and many more manager qualities that I have not mentioned are not practiced, the success will fall short of what it could be. Let me assure you, when people understand where, what, when, how and why they are doing what they are doing and how it benefits them, your chances of success is greatly increased.
When you have people who are provided with appropriate standardized work practices; empowered with all the tools, education, and training they need; SMART goals and expectations to guide them; how and what they will be held accountable for; the freedom to create and express themselves with ideas and concerns without reprisal; a trusting and friendly environment; and a system that promotes and expects continuous improvement, you are far ahead of most leaders.
Some might say, “Sure, if my people had all this, I could succeed too”, but, you know, in the real world how many leaders practice these qualities of a good manager and have a chance at the success they should have? During my 38 years as manager, I saw a lot of managers who never practiced these qualities of a good manager. Some were my own sister operations and some were with other companies. Some believed in the authoritarian way while others just couldn't put it all together. From my own success I know these qualities of a good manager are extremely important in any mananger's success.
The right work environment just causes people to enjoy coming to work every day and feel good about their accomplishments. The right environment not only creates success for the organization but it creates success for the people as well. In this kind of environment people understand the purpose of what their work is all about which is a great step in motivating them to exceed expectations.
You see, with the right work environment you open up trust, ownership, ideas, a willingness to take risk, willingness for people to want to do their best, employee confidence, a better understanding for what’s in it for them, and how standardized work practices work to help them with their job.
I have gone into some work environments where all kinds of problems existed. By having good experience with all these qualities of a good manager it didn't take very long at all to start turning things around and ultimately having great success. These qualities of a good manager has worked so well for me over the 38 years I have been in the managment roll, especially during my last 10 to 15 years before I retired, I wrote a book about it.
